Rory felt the pulse of music from the lodge even before she entered through the storeroom.

Bart was working in the kitchen, prepping a mountain of vegetables. He wore a pair of noise-canceling headphones and gave her a benign smile as she passed through. She was pretty sure nothing ever knocked him off his even keel. Not even eighteen extra mouths to feed.

In the great room, the music was almost deafening. She glanced at all the unfamiliar faces and was glad that the guests they’d welcomed that week—the Jorgensons, Lilys and Mattas had replaced the Delgados and Murphys—were out on the afternoon ride with Megan. Tig and Willow were gone, too, spending the afternoon at the spa with Donna.

Megan had said the arrivals totaled fifty-four, but as Rory sidled through the crowd, it felt like twice that many. Which just reminded her how long it had been since they’d had such a full house at Angel River.

She spotted Marni’s pink hair and angled toward her.

The young woman was gamely trying to deal with an angry, red-faced man. “Missy, I’ve paid good money to—”

Rory stopped next to him, her hand extended. “Good afternoon,” she said loud enough to be heard above the music. “I’m Rory McAdams, manager here at Angel River. You must be Mr. Pith.” Before he had a chance to transfer his baleful look to her, she took his clammy hand and pumped it enthusiastically. “How was your flight from Florida?”

“Bumpy,” he complained.

“Landing at the airstrip often is,” she said with a nod. “Has something to do with the mountains. Is Mrs. Pith here?”

“She’s off with Sabrina somewhere,” he said dismissively. Sabrina was the bride. “She’s not real pleased the welcome spread we expected is nowhere to be found.”

Rory kept her smile in place. The “welcome spread” would have been quite in place if his party had arrived on the right day. “Perhaps we could go to the office for a few minutes,” she suggested. “Finalize some details.”

“Bitsy said everything was all set.” He looked irritated, the lines on his bulbous nose turning even bluer. “What’s there to finalize?”

She leaned closer so she didn’t have to yell to be heard. “She confirmed your group for a few less people than you actually have, so we need to review the rooms and cabins you’ll need.” She wasn’t mentioning their early arrival until she knew that she hadn’t made the error. “My office is just this way.” She extended her arm and, since she was still clasping his hand, managed to get him to take a few steps in the right direction.

Fortunately, once he’d started moving, it was easy enough to keep him moving.

They were nearly out of the great room when she spotted Gage and Noah standing behind the mahogany bar. They were both wearing white shirts rolled up at the elbows and tucked into their jeans. Noah’s long hair was tied up in a man bun. Gage’s shorter hair was tumbling over his forehead.

They both had cocktail shakers
